The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Reviving this thread as con season is upon us.

Received the following from some friends of mine, thought I'd share :)

Costuming Events at Polaris 25

The Friday Night Party theme will be

“Star Trek Federation Celebration”

Our popular Friday Night Party is back for Polaris 25. This year’s theme features “Star Trek, TOS, TNG, DS9, Voyager and Enterprise.

Our experienced costume judges will be awarding prizes for each of our themes “Star Trek” for the “Best Originally Made Costume” and “The Best Purchased or Rented Costume”. Costume prizes will also be given out to the best male and female costumes of each theme, and other deserving costumes.

The party also features door prizes, contests and dancing. If you don’t have a costume, just come and enjoy the fun. Take your photo in front of our scenic Star Trek and space backdrops, or with one of our Star Trek stand-ups.

The party starts at 9:00 pm in the Vaughan Hall Room, located on the lower level of the Sheraton conference centre.

There’s lots to enjoy, so don’t miss it!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE CREATIVE COSTUMER’S CONVENTION

The Creative Costumers' Convention, a Polaris event, brings you 14 hours of costume theme panels and lectures on Saturday July 16h, and Sunday July 17th, 2011. The topics presented will include Science Fiction, Fantasy, Anime and Historical costuming. Join us on Saturday and Sunday mornings, from 10:00 to 11:00 am, for tea or coffee and costume discussions.

Visit our costume exhibit in the Upper Conference Level opposite the main room, beside the Masquerade Desk. Photos are welcome.

The panels take place in the Stouffville Room located on the lower conference level of the hotel

Copies of our Costume Program Schedule will be available in the Stouffville Room, and at the Masquerade and Info Desks.

Polaris 25 Masquerade

This year we welcome back the always wonderful Gord Rose as your Masquerade MC.

The Polaris Masquerade is an amateur costume competition for costumes relating to categories of Anime/Manga, Media (e.g. Star Trek, Star Wars, Babylon 5, computer games, etc.), Fantasy, Science Fiction, and any other related topics.

The Masquerade will take place on Saturday evening after the Constellation Awards. Please see your pocket programme for the exact time.

All contestants must be registered as convention members. Registration for the Masquerade is available at the Masquerade Desk. Contestants must register by 2:00 p.m. on Saturday in order to be in the Masquerade. No late registrations will be accepted.

Contestants should have their cassette/CD queued and ready to play, and hand it in at the Masquerade Desk when they register.

Contestants are to check in at the Masquerade Green Room Desk at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday. Contestants will be assigned their entry number, have their official photo taken, and be judged for workmanship (if desired).

Historical costumes are now eligible for awards, and no SF/Fantasy tie-in theme is necessary. They will be judged in the regular divisions and be eligible for Workmanship Awards, “Best in Division” and “Best in Show Awards”. Our judges will give out awards based on the merits of historical costumes in their designated division, with no specific historical awards allocated in advance.

Please note that Participation Certificates are no longer given out.

Special Awards for Polaris 25:

Come be a part of our 25th Masquerade. Three additional special Masquerade prizes have been added. One each for best themed costume in the categories of "Star Trek", "SVM/True Blood" and "Wheel of Time".

The Costume Society of Ontario is once again donating a one-year membership to the Masquerade winner of "Best-In-Show - Workmanship".

I might go old school at the party and kinda recreate my first con costume (TT8 in 1994) and go as a bajoran, still got the earring and comm badge and I think the rank pin is still around somewhere.

Heh. Toronto Trek 9 in '95 was my first time there!

Star Trek theme huh. Yeah I think I can fit into that one. 8)

Actually I'm on the fence- I would love to enter my Admiral Kirk in the "Purchased costume" contest- but I was also thinking of doing Mirror Kirk as an actual costume I made.

AND I'm considering bringing my T1 future Kyle Reese and entering the masquerade for the first time ever.

Just a heads up now that I'm home and traded some emails with Sgt. Baldwin.

So here it is, about two weeks ago Dom and I had a quick email chat and I dug up a contact I had dealings with back in 2005, a reporter who interviewed a friend and I. The idea was to see if there was interest in media coverage for our group and the upcoming 25th anniversaries of TCon and ALIENS.

As fate would have it, this gentleman was looking for my contact info for a colleague of his - someone looking to interview a scifi costumer in Waterloo Region ... contact information was exchanged.

Earlier today I was in contact with a fellow from TorStar media who wants to interview me and document activities at this year's convention - and I want to share this experience with my compatriots at the UACM.

This is a legitimate media organization, unlike the harassment by those who shall remain nameless in 2007. To boot, the feature is called "People of Record"

http://www.recordphoto.ca/peopleofrecord and is accessed as the featured weekly article on the Waterloo Region Record website http://www.therecord.com/

The current feature is that of a police dispatcher in my community. I am quite flattered to have been chosen for this opportunity and I think it will serve well to show what us folks do best - have fun, entertain, and kick arse :)

In a brief chat with a few friends of mine who serve in executive departments of tcon, they were made aware of what's upcoming as well and I passed along a reminder to please confirm our colonial sweep time and arrangement.

More details as I get them but I wanted to let folks know of upcoming events.

Cheers :)

I have been approached by Polaris for us to host a panel (or two) on the Aliens 25th anniversary, costuming endeavours and tips.

Who would be interested in doing this with me? We'll obviously need dialogue to last an hour.

Sent to Al Matthews and Trevor Steedman:

Sergeant First Class A Matthews
Private T Steedman

Dear Sirs,

I am attempting to organize the Aliens Silver Anniversary festivities for this year’s Polaris Convention. Both of you have hinted at an interest to come, and would like to know if you have made a final decision on your presence. I’ve been asked to host a panel or two on 25 years of Aliens as well as Colonial Marine costuming, and would very much like to integrate the both of you in these plans.

I await your word, and certainly hope that we Colonial Marines may play host to your pleasure in Toronto this year.

Very Best Regards,
Sgt Dom Baldwin
United Americas Colonial Marines

I just got told under no uncertain terms to enter the photo contest... I am pleased to find out it is started up in honour of a friend of mine, Joanne Muth, who died last December - I worked for years on the security team with her hubby Dave.

Best of luck guys, sounds like a great event (the pics are always impressive). Would love to get to this one day – maybe next year now that my brother's moved back to Canada. Hope your panel goes well and you get some of it on video. Have a good one!
