I was recently invited out to the Dundracon gaming convention in California, and I was specifically asked to run
a classic Aliens™ game for some regulars at the convention. I wanted to use concept vehicles to add a little
extra flavor and detail to the game, so I asked my brother Andrew to mock up the classic Ron Cobb APC design.
I've been a fan of Cobb's work forever and have I always wanted to see the original APC in 3D.

Andrew just finished some 'fresh off the factory floor' renders last night and you're among the first people to see
what we're calling the M579-D10 'Razorback' in battle dress green. I'm very happy with his interpretation
of Ron Cobb's concept, as were the players at the convention.

This is the mock-up I did for the convention with the new green renders showing the stats and armaments for the M579-D10. I'm
working on more materials and a pdf brochure, but life has me buried just enough that those materials might be awhile arriving.

My many thanks to Andrew for punching this one out during his busy schedule. He never disappoints.

I'm working on some additional print materials that will be made available, but we could add a poster to the list. I'll keep you in the loop.

Thank you sir, that would be the cat's meow! :)

If there will be a order list in the future, tell your brother he might as well throw my name into the punchbowl cuz I'm sold :D

Thanks for the post :delta:

I'm speechless!

Never thought I'd see that one in 3D. Fantastic work. Are there any pictures with the main turret extended?

Cheers,
Stefan

I would love to see that "grown" and made into a resin kit! Excellent work!!!

Funky design, but as a personnel carrier its a total fail. ;)

Not yet. I'm going to do a fully illustrated cutaway in time, but not until I clear my plate a little.

Heh. Yeah.

We talked about this at length when modeling it and after. Two primary issues arise.

The first is the position of the back wheels (which can turn 360 degrees) in relation to the 'primary' personnel hatch/ramp. If either wheel is stuck or turned more than just 13-15% from a parallel line with the body forward, the ramp cannot open, so I specifically mention an 'emergency coil return' built into the pivots. A kind of chain return that's either under tension or connected to some sort of winch system that forces the wheels into true under emergency situations. We also considered the seams and how the vehicle opens on the sides in the original sketch in what looks like some sort of weapons package compartment and labeled this as an added emergency escape hatch.

The second obvious issue is the grade capability of the vehicle, which is conquered a little if you accept that both this APC and the one from the film have the capacity to lift up higher on a rising suspension system. The Aliens Colonial Technical Manual talks about this, so we included it in the game mechanics we ran at Dundracon. A few of us have also talked about the entire 'nose section' hinging up on a steep grade, probably at the main seam at the front wheels.

In the end, do we care? Not really. We just wanted to model the thing. Too many of Cobb's designs have yet to be realized in 3D.

Mike Rush did some renders of this vehicle many years ago, I had them on display with my collection at an exhibition I did back in 2006 if I recall correctly.

I prefer this to the one we got in the movie, sweet model.

I prefer the film's simple brute slab to this fancy Lamborghini (nice tho it is).

It's definitely a cool design! I have a lot of mixed emotions about it (which is weird).

So let's say that some up and coming director decided to remake Aliens and this is the ACP that came rolling out of the Dropship... (burning rubber so to speak  ).

I think my initial reaction would be that of rolling my eyes and thinking, "They just had to (mess) with the design didn't they?"

But of course this was done by one of the design artists on the film itself- so it isn't reimagined, it is original.

I think if I had never seen the APC we saw in the film, and THIS rolled off the Dropship I would have been throwing my fist into the air and screaming "YEEEESSSSS!!!"

In my humble opinion, it is a little too sleek looking for a tank/troop transport (the same goes for Syd Mead's original concept Dropship: a little too clean and sleek compared to the final design)- however I do like it as an EU vehicle.

I did, but it's not a patch on the model you see above. Here's a small view - it really suffers by comparison!

Image

In my defence this was about fifteen years ago. ;) It's gratifying to see that we both ended up with mostly the same shapes, anyway.

15 years ago - whoa! That was even before I did my first APC model in 3ds!
Do you recall what program you used to do this? Any other gems you'd like to show?

Stefan

That is awesome! I though that I had found all interpretations of it over the years, but I only ever discovered 2D mock-ups in vectored art or photoshop. Most of them fantastic in their own right. Great work. It's amazing how separate interpretations can be realized independent of each other and still come out looking so similar. I've added it to my archive of 'stuff'.

Hey Mike, do you have a larger size copy of that image? They both look great... and like the one used in the film,
would be near impossible to scratch build as a real vehicle. :)

Has anyone done an interior layout?

This was in 3DS Max, which I was trying to teach myself at the time. I did do several other Aliens-related models over the years but I won't hijack Yellowjacket's thread. ;)

Andrew works for EA Utah where he worked on a NERF™ first person shooter game for the Wii. Just for fun, he mocked up the APCs NERF-style™.
