The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

There was probably a lot of "cheating" done with the film...

But is there a way of watching the film to figure out what is where? I mean, Ripley didn't have to walk very far with Hicks to get to the landing pad right?

At any rate I'm absolutely loving this!!! :D  :delta:

It's like a detailed cross-section of the Enterprise to me (which anyone who knows me, knows that's saying a lot  )!

Okay, does anyone have internal floorplan schematics of the colony? Like the one seen on the map table?

Thanks for sharing the image of the exterior Gio! Great picture!

Looking at the minature pic Giò posted, SJ was right about the South Lock.

OK Here are my additions...

I'm sure some of this has been noticed befor but I'll throw it all in here for reference.

The blue "table map" clearly shows the outline of the colony complex and positions it in relation to the AP. AP being off to the upper right of this image (at the other end of the tunnel) as we know.
The dimensions of the complex on the table map are not 100% accurate but it is apparently a stylised map.

This layout does not agree with the mininature photo provded by Gio, which suggests that they either had the AP in the wrong place in the model (space constraints perhaphs) or perhaphs the AP model was relocted sometime after this photo was taken. We'd need to study the movie footage more to find out.

(According to the map, the AP should be off to the right of this image, not in the background as we see here.)

Having an idea of the layout of the table map... and as we saw in the movie (and in the photo's on the first page) zooming in from here:

I think we can orient that 'corridoor view' on the overview roughly as shown.

The atmosphere processor is directly to the south of the colony, slightly to the west. It can be seen in the background when the Jordan Tractor enters the colony through the windbreak structure before we cut to the interior shots of all the colonists at work, and you can just about see the top of it when Apone is scanning the area with his binoculars.
It's best seen though in this shot of the 1:6(?) scale model; note the North Lock on the bottom left and the central driveway. To the right of this driveway is the all-important bar and casino.

Some additional shots of the colony model (I think this particular model was for the dropship fly-by and others).
I don't know if these will help you Stefan, maybe they will, maybe they won't, they're probably not much use if you're replicating the glass diagram. Gio's looks to be the most accurate. Nice to look at, anyways. 8)

And a couple more views. Top one again the 1:6 model looking down the driveway toward the south. Bar and Casino are to the right.
Bottom shot is of the other end of the colony. South Lock is to the right, central driveway and casino to the left. APC travels down here then swings around and parks infront of the south lock. Above are the windows/shutters to Operations.

I wonder if Space Jockey wants to work on that as his next project after the Sulaco?

Would love to, however I don't want to interfere with what Stefan/Bugstomper is doing. 8)
Plus if I did we'd have to decide whether to match the glass screen or the model, as they vary slightly. Either way it'd probably be as detailed as the model. I don't know, what do you think, Stefan? Probably be a mylar print same as Sulaco & Nostromo, no intention of doing the screen replica. :?:

I missed Stefan's post about doing the transparency map.

No problem on my side if you want to give the colony map a go. There's a good chance you'll be finished before I start on the actual colony ;)
Also, with more people working on this it's easier to spot all those differences in the maps/models.

Cheers,
Stefan

Stefan;
I’d be more than happy to develop the colony plan to a point where it matches the sketches above, which are the same as the one on the screen in the movie. At that point, I could pass it to you and you could use it if you want for your transparent screen replica.
On my side of things, I’d then refine it so it’s similar in level of detail to the partial blueprint in the Aliens Tech Manual and the models.
I should be able to get it to the level of detail you perhaps want fairly quickly, it seems like some of the wing modules are replicated within other parts of the colony.
Anyways, let me know and if it sounds okay, I’ll start work on it in between the Sulaco related stuff.

Sounds great to me! :)
The biggest challenge I'm currently dealing with is getting the line widths right. The screenshots are often blurry and it's therefore hard to identify if a bold line is really that or two or more lines with a smaller width.
Also the text elements on the colony map part are almost impossible to decipher...

I'll post an image as soon as I'm done with V1.0 ;)

Cheers,
Stefan

Yeah, not sure about that text, either. Way too small to figure out. I'll take a look through and see if I have any more images over the weekend that might help you out. ;-)

I'd be happy with a big resolution map for scrolling about on my ipod.

Can anyone make a iphone app of it?

I know it'll require a wait, but would the movie in HD help with that?

Might be. It depends on the quality of the source material and how much effort they put into it.
Bladerunner is in my opinion a good example of what can be done. However, you can't expect miracles...

You suck. I mean that with all due love and respect of course  I say that because while I may know Photoshop pretty well, I never learned how to use Illustrator (or Corel, etc).

Can't wait to see (and hopefully order!!!) the finished project!
