The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Hi folks,

I'm looking for pictures of the Colony and AP-Station map (the transparent map in the colony command center). Anyone with good pictures? Does the original still exist?

Cheers,
Stefan

I'm sure there's someone out there with more information, but here are some images I took from the film. (Thumbnails)

Got one very blurry pic of the colony.
Check out Jan's papercraft site, he has some good 3d renders.

I'd leave them on here, they're good for working out the scale of the colony to Atmosphere Processor.

Thanks guys! :)

Space Jockey's picture is only a part of the complete map. I have screenshots, but I had hoped that there are some good behind the scenes pictures or something like that. Here's the best I could find:

Bit of a side question-

Is the map over Hicks' and Ripley's shoulder supposed to be condensed or something? I mean the Atmosphere Processor wasn't right next to the colony.

Yes, the scales of each are also different. One could would out the scale of the AP relative to the colony by looking at the 'squares' or grid on the map in the screenshots.

Do we know what happened to the board/map behind them?

Not stuck under Harry's couch is it?

Harry is using it as a coffee table.

It probably got destroyed when they shot the aliens break into Operations and Vasquez is firing the grenade launcher. I can’t remember as I’d have to watch the movie again, but I think for a split second we see the map shatter in the background.

I know there is a still photo of Hicks reclining in a chair in front of that map, but I don't know that it shows the map clearly.

As a Alien/s re-searching fan I did some light Co-op with Jan doing some advisory on his 3D map a few years back so I can highly recommend it. As always there are some slight scale issues to be considered but it’s the best that we have in 3D.

The transparent operation screen is based on the blueprint of the LV-426 as we can see here in the thread. This mid stage blueprint sketch was made in several steps (note that the design on the LZ is not finished on this print as of other prints). This blueprint sketch is suggested to be made by Cobb or Cameron. It however differs in several ways from both of the onscreen scale colony models seen in the film. The layout was probably changed during actual placement of the models preparing the scenes. The APS and LZ are deliberately rescaled to fit on the transparent OP screen as one is larger and the other is offset further south (?).

(Nerd Fact: We can assume that the OP screen is actually an earlier version of the colony and that the colony has been modified and upgraded several times since it was built 20 years ago).

/J

I'm toying with the idea of doing a replica of the transparent map. I'm just working on the APS which is featured quite well in the screenshots. The colony itself is a differend matter. I had hoped someone would come up with some behind the scenes shots or something like that showing the map (and the labels on it) more clearly....

Cheers,
Stefan

Ta for that Giò. :)

I wonder if Space Jockey wants to work on that as his next project after the Sulaco?

Using the colony map that Gio supplied (super huge thanks Gio! )-

Would it be possible to label "what is where" on the map? Where the North Lock is? Operations, medical etc?

I mean... I know where the landing grid is.

Giò...awesome. 8)
Just quickly labeled a couple of areas....
I know on the Quadrilogy Set, ther are a couple of shots of the set design model done for Operations and the Med Lab.
Might be worth looking a these to get and idea for the exact location. :D

I don't think we can use the table-top version as seen in the film screen caps above to help identify areas though, as that seems to show a different layout/shape to Giò's hand drawn version.

Edit: Looking at Space Jockey's layout and bearing in mind that most maps have North at the top, I think it might be like this:

The light blue line in Operations is the windows they look out of to see the emergency venting of the AP.

I don’t know if I’d think too much about the north arrow; it’s good drafting practice to show north as up on the page or sheet and we do it wherever we can, but half the time we find the site or building won’t fit on the sheet if we keep to that, so we just rotate the building to make the drawing clearer and rotate the north arrow appropriately. A survey or siteplan would generally show north as up however.

Through the center of the colony we can see the driveway between the two sections of the colony. I’m at work now so cannot look, but look at where the APC parks in relation to the wind-break structural that surrounds part of the colony at the beginning when the marines arrive, and in the special edition where the APC drives down the driveway through the center of the colony, turns a corner and parks next to the South Lock when Bishop, Ripley, Burke & Gorman step out and enter the colony.

I reckon the drawing above is the same as the one on the Perspex/glass map.

Hmm, can't find my Quadrilogy boxset. :?

Don't think I've lent it to anyone, so wtf have I done with it?

I'll accept your view of where the South and North locks are until we know otherwise. :)
