A recast is when you take someone elses castings, make your own mold of it, and then proceed to make your own castings. Most times a recast is of lesser quality than an original cast, but that normally depends on the skill of the person doing the molding and casting. Most resin castings made from rtv molds tend to shrink a bit so the peices get smaller and smaller with each generation. Also, lots of recasters are simply in it for a quick buck so it is not surprising if recasts are lacking in quality.

Most times recasting is considered bad in this hobby. The recaster does not have to put the time, money, and effort into creating the original master. He simply takes someone elses hard work and pours rtv over it, not a hard thing to do. Sometimes his recast sales are in direct competition with the original maker. Most people don't like their work being stolen definitly do not like competing with thier own peices for sales.

Other times the pieces being recast are no longer available and/or the original maker no longer cares. It is always best to obtain permission if possible before recasting. If a talented person stops production because he is upset over his peices being recast the whole hobby is hurt so a recaster can make a quick buck.

You will have to do your own research and use your own morals to determine if you want to support a recaster.
