The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Hello!

I'm about to build Mark Drake's Colonial Marine Smartgunner costume.
I've been studying for a while now and start to see the big picture.

I created another build thread to RPF (http://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=238624). I'm on the last stretch with my Judge Dredd costume and then it's full steam with this project.
Looks like it takes a while to see the PX section but that's cool. I think I know where to get most of the stuff.

I ordered a headset kit so the project has started. :) I'll post photos when I have something to show you.

Acquired:
- Smartgunner headset kit
- M69 flak vest
- US army jungle boots (Vietnam, vibram soles)
- OG106 or OG507 hot weather cap
- Drake's dog tags
- MG42 + drum ammo mag + ammo chain
- Kawasaki GPZ750 left side switch block
- Kawasaki AR125 footpeg brackets
- Top handle
- Rear handle with hand guard and "trigger box" and connecting rod
- Flash suppressor
- Top camera
- Explorer Night Raider knife
- Smartgunner chest armour
- Gloves
- Steadicam vest & double arm
- 3 patches for the vest
- Colonial Marine BDU pants (Aliens camo)
- Shoulder lamp

Ordered:

Needed:
- Smartgun power unit
- Private Drake's sleeveless shirt
- Chicken bones for the necklace

I've been following M56 Smart One's awesome build for some time now and keep his project an inspiration.

I'm working on a Smarty too... Where can the headset be ordered from?

I've got some of the genuine camera flash parts that were used in the movie prop, but having a headset to work with would help me immensely.

Thanks!

Hi Jouko,
Good luck with your project.
I just fixed a wiring issue on my M56A2 build.
What about Drake’s knife?
For some of the needed parts you could contact “Chef”. His smarty build is great.

Trooper 1974, you've got a pm.

Hi, 577!
Thank you. I've seen your thread too.
Knife, I'll add that the list.
Chef is on my "go-to-vendors" list.

Project update:
Got my headset kit ages ago. I decided to keep the weight of costume down with some parts so I got a vest with foam instead of armour plates. Found a OG-507 cap (hard to find size) ja went with re-pro boots with Panama soles to keep also the cost "reasonable".

Most likely I'm going to get a airsoft MG-42 soon.

Acquired:
- Smartgunner headset kit

Ordered:
- M69 flak vest
- US army jungle boots (Vietnam, vibram soles)
- OG106 or OG507 hot weather cap

You can find a couple of MG 42 Airsoft based M56 build topics now.
Shout (send a PM) if you need any help.
After the next weekends I hope to post my update.

I'm thinking about a similar Vasquez project but quite simply don't have the skill. Can anyone tell me how much weight I'd be carrying without using foam?

Do you mean still using an Airsoft MG42 and a stedicam rig? If so, in not sure on actual weights, as it varies between rigs, build parts etc but your probably looking at anywhere between 20-40 kg. A resin SG would make things a little lighter.

It all comes down to the smart gun. MG-42 weighs (without the ammo magazine and belt) almost 12 kg and on top of that comes the extra pieces. If that's not enough then the steadicam vest and arm needed for it weigh at least 4 kg. With all the rest of the gear and clothing you might come close to 20 kg or more.

Airsoft smart gun cuts the weight in half and with it you can get a vest and arm which both weigh less too. Estimate: 15 kg or less.

Arrived:
- M69 vest
- Green military cap
- US army jungle boots (Vietnam was era)

Right sized cap was pretty hard to find (enough room for headset), replica vest (with foam as armour) is stiff but like the re-pro boots I managed to get perfectly sized items.

Finally got this project moved forward a bit and ordered an airsoft MG-42. It was priced just about the same as used MG-42/53 but weighs only half.
The older you get, the more comfortable costume you want.

Without the kevlar plates and using airsoft machine gun I've cut the weight 9 kgs (=20 pounds) and that's a lot.

Also got Drake's dog tags.

9kg plus Kawaski struts etc.
Depending on the arm you bought some of the 7kg arms/springs could still carry that much.

This is an amazing topic on the M56A2 build:

Good luck with your build!

Thanks, Frank, I mean sergeant! ;)

My beautiful MG-42 arrived and I ordered trousers and patches.
Now I'm off to find the motorcycle parts.

Bollocks!

My footbeg bracket supplier called and said the parts had already been sold. Hopefully get them from another supplier. We should have people making these parts from rubber all the time. It would things easier. :) Rubber parts wouldn't break like resin parts.

At first I tried to find rubber MG-42 but the maker hasn't got a working mold at the moment and he doesn't send outside California.

Found another supplier for the footbeg brackets, restored and powder coated, better than new. I can decide how to weather them. :)

If anyone needs these brackets, I can get more of them, used or restored.

Kawasaki parts arrived. Especially the restored footbeg brackets look spectacular, just like new (or better)!

Those brackets are still available, a couple of pairs, restored and used.

Great, that will give them the right look.

What's next on your list?

- Steadicam vest & double arm => Suggest you check out the set Rob mentioned in another post
- Smartgunner chest armour => Nick-a-tron and Rob or on this
- Smartgun power unit => Spatcave.com
- Shoulder lamp => Rob

As always any question just let us know.

I meant I can get my hands on a couple of pairs of brackets if someone needs them either used and restored and powder coated or just used.

I chose the restored brackets so I can add the weathering I like. My airsoft MG-42 looks new too.

Next I'll wait for my BDU trousers to arrive from Rob. Maybe I'll try to find a suitable sleeveless shirt and get it printed or try to find more parts for the smart gun.
Rest of the stuff I figure out later after I've recovered from a painful spinal disc herniation which renders my left arm pretty much useless at the moment.

Thanks for the info, I'll try to find Rob's suggestion. I'd like to have the whole smart gun supported by the arm but I'll see the options first.

Highly recommand that. Anyway with a good arm you can adjust the spring tention.
