The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Oh yeah. Missed that - i'd say if you can bring it easily do so Rex. Cables to connect stuff might be useful too.

Have never had anyone take a shot at improving the quality of the pulse rifle sound byte?

Surely someone here has Adobe Audition or the like to layer it, at stuff to make it punchier?

If not... Link me up, I'll take a shot at it.

Knock yourself out, but there are some constraints...

It needs to be loopable, under ~50 kB in size and mono. The files are pretty dry because a little processing is done in realtime during playback. The program that plays it back pitchbends it slightly, adds some reverb and adds the PRstop soundeffect when it is released. The pitchbend changes subtly (too subtly) over the length of a sustained burst of fire.

The loop could be made longer, but not excessively so - max of 2 seconds at most. The reverb is applied to the playback buffer so helps smooth over minor glitches in the looping of a very short file - but with a longer loop, any problems in the looping will be more audible.

If I recall correctly, the PRloop sound and the PRstop sound is overlapped by about 5ms. The pitch bend applied to the stop sound is somewhat greater than the loop.

So, they need to be kept to be similar sizes and length as these. Also consider that a load is lost when playing them very loud over rather distorted amps...

(and yes! The loop file and the stop file are different WAV formats... I have no recollection of why I did it like that. The exact WAV format isn't important though - provided it's small and mono)

PR release
PRstop.WAV [43.2 KiB]
Downloaded 151 times

Loop
PRloop_new.WAV [6.09 KiB]
Downloaded 167 times

Yeah the big stack ones, I mention a small practice amp half way down and I didn't get a response wether to bring it or not. The only cable it needs is power I think I'll have a look :)

I think we'd need any gear for both nights.

I setup the kit and then Aliens tend to spend the rest of the weekend growling and attacking anyone who goes near it. So I wouldn't want to disturb the setup partway through ... :)

Thanks for offering Steve. But we'd want it for the duration, or for failures that occur during the event. I think we should have enough amps, including a couple of smaller ones from Rex and others that could be used together in case of problems.

However, if anyone has any assorted audio cables, particularly 1/4" to 3.5mm stuff that they can bring, it would be appreciated. I hope to have enough but it would be good to have spares available onsite.

Plus anyone who brings cables or similar, stick a bit of tape round and name em so we know who's they are to make tear down easier & quicker.

Picked mine up today, goes 'thrum' when switched on and a little LED lights up - other than that don't have owt to test it.

If you've got a 3.5mm to 1/4" jack then you can plug your phone/iPod/Walkman into it and it'll work :)
#Won't be as loud as a guitar playing through it so don't get worried if it's a bit quiet
