Post subject:  HBW's Armour Building Thread

Hi all,

Time for another armour building thread!
Must be something that's in the Spring air that's bringing all newbies out of the woodwork :)

Got a nice big box from Chef last week, thought I'd share my progress with it..

After a bit of trimming and sanding (whoever recommended cheap emery boards needs a medal :) ) I started to paint.
Began with the back plate, started to use Tamiya TS-70 spray, but after using the best part of two tins on just one panel switched to Halfords ultra-matt camo green, it's a shade lighter but I'm sure the difference won't be noticable when everything's weathered. Pattern is being done by hand with Tamiya acrylics, Sand, Flat Brown J.A. Grey and NATO Black. Quite pleased with the way it's turning out.

Same drill for the chest plate

Couple of quick shots of what I have going on so far, chest, back, ab-pad and trimmed ab armour

The really nerve-racking part was cutting and drilling something so well made (and expensive).
Have never used a rivet gun before, so that was interesting too. After a couple of practice goes on scrap plastic it was time to bite the bullet...
Image

Success! Hopefully I can manage the rest without making a pig's ear out of it...

Hope this thread will help someone, I've only ever built aifix kits before so I'm very much learning as I go.

Cheers to Chef for a) the best starting materials and b) putting up with the daft Q's I've asked him (and will prob continue to ask) :)

If anyone has any tips or comments, please share - all help is appreciated.

Cheers,
Doug

Thanks for the kind words!
Chef - I'll have a couple of Q's heading your way soon...

Riveted the side straps, now have a shell that supports itself

Painted the shoulders

Have just finished strapping them to the chest, so that's the upper body finished, aside from weathering/graffiti. no pics yet though - need to have a shave so I look a bit more presentable :)

Greaves next...

Doug

Just about done now, still have a few little bits to do, shortening straps, adding grenade loops etc.

It's been a fun build, haven't done anything like it before and have learned a few things along the way.
There's a few bits I'd do differently if I did it again, but nothing major :)

On with the pics...

It looks good. The camo pattern on the armor goes with the multicam very well. What order did you put the paints on? Dark colours first, or lights first?

Cheers :)
Colours were all over the shop, started w/ the green base, then sand - NATO black - brown and finally the grey/white stripes
Topped off w/ a matt varnish then crushed artists' charcoal then another coat of varnish.
Scrapes wee done with a dremel, used the chuck without any tool attached.

Doug

I was just about to ask you which colours you used for the armour but a quick re-read dealt with that. Genuinely excellent work, your weathering really pulls it all together. Nice one mate, I'll be using this as a reference when I get my armour going.

Had a go at making a duct tape dummy to hold everything together too, working quite well and only cost £4 for four rolls of tape from Poundland
