Apparently Sea Otters "hold hands" like this to avoid drifting apart while asleep!

Also, I've read that Sea Otters REALLY love baby seals. They love them to death. ;)

I'm more of a Beaver man myself. :)

Yeah I saw that when I found the "holding hands" pic but nothing I could find made it clear if it was regularly occurring Sea Otter behaviour or a single incident of aberrant behaviour witnessed by humans and taken as being "normal"?

Hence I decided to give them the benefit of the doubt and not post it. ;-)

BTW Woody I picked up several Otter Brewery Beer Mats for you at the Decommissioning of the Red Cow (UKCM HQ) last weekend with Otter Cartoons on them! ;-)

I hoped it was a single case, so I looked into it when I saw the Internet meme. But no. The REALLY scary thing is: Someone did a published academic paper on it!

Heather S. Harris, Stori C. Oates, Michelle M. Staedler, M. Tim Tinker, David A. Jessup, James T. Harvey, and Melissa A. Miller, Lesions and Behavior Associated with Forced Copulation of Juvenile Pacific Harbor Seals (Phoca vitulina richardsi) by Southern Sea Otters (Enhydra lutris nereis) Aquatic Mammals 2010, 36(4), 331-341, DOI 10.1578/AM.36.4.2010.331

The study I read (looks like it was this one) showed 19 observed occurrences over a 2 year period, with the root cause believed to be a polygynous societal structure.

Guess the little fellas get pretty fecking nasty when they don't get their lovin'...
According to the staff at the Tamar Sanctuary, they also get *very* nasty if a careless keeper steps on one of them during feeding time!

I think I'd be pretty pissed off if someone trod on me while I was chowing down!
