After Action Report: -------------------------- Well, that was a clusterf**k. This year’s con was more about queuing up to get into line to queue for anything, than ever before. My first DragonCon was in 2011. It was busy then with a lot of queuing up. But at least it only took you 10 minutes to get from the Hilton to the food mall. This year it took me 45 minutes at one point. The average for 30 mins. Why? Well, in my opinion, TPTB are simply letting far, far too many people into the convention, and I’m not talking about Pre-reg members. It seems to be the day pass attendees. The number of day passes I saw far outnumbered the full weekend passes. Now don’t get me wrong, queuing for features, panels, etc, is what I expect to do. Sometimes the queuing for these is the fun part, as you get talking to people. However, having to queue up just to get from one location to another is pathetic. Add to the thronging mass the fact that (from an outsiders point of view at least) the average American lacks the simple ability to queue properly and you get clusterf**ks everywhere. The worst was the main transit junction between the Marriot Atrium and the corridors leading to the food mall and the Hyatt. (Where the blood donation center is) In that section underneath Pulse, we had people entering from the right, cutting across to go left. People entered from the left and cut across to the right, conflicting with those cutting across from the right. People coming from the Hyatt then cut across to head for High Velocity side of the atrium, while people from the food mall cut across to head for the ballroom side of the atrium. The result was everyone cutting in front of everyone. A total and complete standstill and jam up. It’s not hard to orientate yourself to the left hand side of the room if you intend to leave the Mariott Atrium and go to the food Mall or to the right if you want to head for the Hyatt. It works on the roads. You have a left lane to turn left and a right lane to turn right. Simple! Hotel staff or DragonCon Powers really need to put up a ribbon barrier in the center of that junction to force people to orient themselves into “Going left” and “Going right” lines in future cons. Much like they have for the escalators and I found the line for those to move very well this year! In general though, a lot of these issues can be half avoided by putting an absolute hard limit on the amount of passes! Sure, they limit pre-reg to a given number. But they do not seem to limit day passes in any shape or form. Someone is going to get hurt if it does not change. |
